چکیده

Protein–polyelectrolyte coacervates have gained interest for their potential to stabilize proteins or function as adhesives and biological implications in the formation of membraneless organelles. To effectively design these materials predict formation, knowledge macromolecular properties that dictate phase separation is required. This review highlights recent advances understanding molecular determinants protein–polyelectrolyte behavior. Properties promote pairs are covered from perspective synthetic systems simplified condensates. Prominent factors determine coacervate material include nonspecific intermolecular interactions, well specific interactions structures. Here, we summarize essential roles electrostatics, including charge magnitude distribution, (bio)polymer chemistry structure, post-translational modifications protein both a cellular context.

Effect of polyelectrolyte structure on protein-polyelectrolyte coacervates: coacervates of bovine serum albumin with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) versus chitosan.

Electrostatic interactions between synthetic polyelectrolytes and proteins can lead to the formation of dense, macroion-rich liquid phases, with equilibrium microheterogeneities on length scales up to hundreds of nanometers. The effects of pH and ionic strength on the rheological and optical properties of these coacervates indicate microstructures sensitive to protein-polyelectrolyte interactio...

Microencapsulation of oils using whey protein/gum Arabic coacervates.

Microencapsulating sunflower oil, lemon and orange oil flavour was investigated using complex coacervation of whey protein/gum arabic (WP/GA). At pH 3.0-4.5, WP and GA formed electrostatic complexes that could be successfully used for microencapsulation purposes. The formation of a smooth biopolymer shell around the oil droplets was achieved at a specific pH (close to 4.0) and the payload of oi...

Mussel Coating Protein-Derived Complex Coacervates Mitigate Frictional Surface Damage

The role of friction in the functional performance of biomaterial interfaces is widely reckoned to be critical and complicated but poorly understood. To better understand friction forces, we investigated the natural adaptation of the holdfast or byssus of mussels that live in high-energy surf habitats. As the outermost covering of the byssus, the cuticle deserves particular attention for its ad...

Mesophase Separation and Probe Dynamics in Protein-Polyelectrolyte Coacervates

Protein–polyelectrolyte coacervates are self-assembling macroscopically monophasic biomacromolecular fluids whose unique properties arise from transient heterogeneities. The structures of coacervates formed at different conditions of pH and ionic strength from poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), were probed using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. Mea...

New update on molecular determinants of colistin resistance in bacteria

Colistin relates to the polymyxin group of antibiotics. This antibiotic is still used to destroy gram-negative bacteria as a last resort. However, resistance to this antibiotic has been reported and is appearing day by day. Not much information is available on the exact mechanisms of resistance to this antibiotic. Also, not enough information about pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics is avail...
